Studio

Hopper Group LTD, trading as Edward Hopper.

Studio worktable covered with drawings, colour cards and fabric swatches in hard sunlight

The name

The studio took its trading name from the painter who spent a career looking at the same places we work in: hotel lobbies, cafeterias, late-night bars, empty corridors, a bedroom with a rectangle of sun on the bed.

What we borrow from that work is not a colour scheme. It is a way of judging a room: by what it looks like with nobody in it, at the two or three hours of the day when the light is doing something particular.

Approach

  1. 01

    Survey before scheme

We measure, photograph at three times of day, and sit in the building through a service before we draw anything.

  2. 02

    Specify for the twentieth year

Hospitality interiors fail at the joints and the edges. We detail for cleaning trolleys, wet coats and 3am housekeeping, then make it look effortless.

  3. 03

    Buy carefully, once

We hold the procurement schedule ourselves so the design that was approved is the design that arrives on site.

  4. 04

    Leave the building better

Where a property is listed or characterful, restoration comes first and decoration second. Reversibility is a design constraint, not an afterthought.

Clients

We work with large hotel groups, restaurant operators and private members' clubs across the United Kingdom, alongside independent owners of single properties.

Almost all of our appointments are covered by confidentiality agreements, so projects in the portfolio are described by type, place and year rather than by brand. Named references are available on request once an enquiry is under way.
